Which Syllable Do
you Stress?
Properly pronouncing English words
with two or more syllables can often be challenging for advanced ESL
(English as a Second Language) speakers.
There are few rules that guide the
speaker in deciding which syllable to emphasize. For example, the
word "mother" could be pronounced:
MOTHer
or
mothER
Only one
pronunciation is correct.
When
someone stresses the wrong syllable, miscommunication can occur. |

How the Program
Works
We have identified the 1000 most
commonly used English words. Of these, 334 have two or more
syllables.
These 334 words are used in sentences
and dialogues by native, American-English speakers. You can see and
hear the sentences with the proper stress identified. This allows
you to learn how to say these most-used words properly in real
sentences.
The program consists of 45 lessons
delivered in a daily email format. Each day, Monday through Friday,
a new lesson arrives by email. Each lesson takes about five minutes
to complete.
The programs work on any PC that has
an internet connection with common email programs. |
